And that brings me to my fourth point—and to the only other basis we have for comparison here—which is the fact that Paramount has compressed this film, which is nearly three hours in length, onto a dual-layered 66GB disc. That results in an average video data rate of about 46 Mbps and a file size of 53.4GB. Meanwhile, on all of their own Sergio Leone 4K Ultra HD releases (A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), Kino Lorber Studio Classics has taken advantage of triple-layered 100GB discs. The result of that choice amounts to video data rates that are much higher (at 80, 85, and 60 Mbps respectively). What’s more, the 4K Digital version of this film now available for download on Kaleidescape has a file size of 86.8 GB! So by choosing to use a 66GB disc instead of 100GB, Paramount Home Entertainment probably saved themselves some money in replication costs. But they certainly compromised the image quality, and unnecessarily so. Now I haven’t watched the Kaleidescape version yet to compare the two 4K presentations, and at this point I’m almost reluctant to do so for fear that it’ll prove too irritating. But my suspicion is that the K-Scape presentation features very light and organic grain that actually looks like grain, along with slightly better fine image detail and greater dimensionality. You simply can’t take a 4K image file and compress it by 30% and expect no harm to be done to the image. I mean, come on. What’s the point of restoring the Sistine Chapel ceiling if you’re just going to squeeze it onto a postcard? The frustrating thing is that this 4K image is still good looking on the whole—certainly very watchable once you get used to it—and it offers much to recommend it over the previous Blu-ray. But I would love to see what Paramount’s raw 4K scan looked like prior to the noise reduction. And I would really love to see what this image looks like encoded for a 100GB disc, instead of 66GB. I suspect the differences would be revealing. [UPDATE: I’ve now compared the 4K disc to the Kaleidescape presentation. The larger file size and higher video data rate on the K-Scape download definitely makes the difference between the film’s grain structure looking natural and organic instead of like vague digital compression artifacting as it appears on the disc. Fine detail appears just a tad more refined and overall dimensionality is improved as well. Bottom line: I really wish this film had been released on a 100GB disc. If I were to grade the Kaleidescape video image, I’d give it an A- compared to the 4K UHD’s B grade on disc.] Melko pahaltahan tuo kuulostaa. En näe syytä miksei tätäkin voisi hankkia, joskin bluray versio todennäköisesti minulle riittää. Ehkä parasta tässä on kuitenkin se, että ehkä tämä aloittaa trendin, koska kaikista filmille kuvatuista TV-sarjoista voidaan tehdä 4K-siirrot. Miksei vaikka Deep Space Nine tai Voyager? Miksi turhaan haikaillaan blurayden perään, kun voitaisiin hypätä sen vaiheen yli ja siirtyä suoraan 4K-aikaan? Toki CGI-olisi upscale (ja olisihan se sitä HD:näkin), mutta kyllä minä sen kanssa pystyisin elämään.
Ottaen kuitenkin huomioon, kuinka paljon pitempään tavallinen blu-ray on ollut markkinoilla ja kuinka paljon laajempi tarjonta sillä on, niin 4K myy siihen nähden oikein hyvin.
Kai ne julkaisijat katsoo, että kannattaako tehdä 4k, jos myynti jää pienehköksi. Ja tietysti yksi syy siihen, että julkaisevat mieluummin niitä 30-50€ keräilijöille suunnattuja limited editioneja joissa isommat katteet.

Vähänkin "lähes arvottomammista" valtavirtajulkaisuista eroavat spesiaalimmat painoserät alkaa olla nekin 'store exclusive' -rahastuksia, vaikka kovemmilla katteillahan kauppaa käydään, ja siihen päälle vielä monet muut mahdolliset muodollisuudet (esim. jenkkijulkaisuista monet joita ei saa Suomeen(kaan) kuin suhteilla, jos niilläkään) suorastaan estämään muiden kuin maksukykyisten pääsyn pitojen ääreen. Vähemmästäkin pistää hälläväliä-asenteisenkin kupin nurin. Alkaa olla melkoisia aarteita mm. monet importeista, jotka ylipäätään kokoelmaa päätyy koristamaan. Niiden valintojen myötävaikutuksella keräilijöistä köyhimmät tuntee harrastuksen nahoissaan à la ravintoköyhintä ruokaa, mitä päivittäistavarakaupan riistohinnoilla ylipäätään vielä irtoaa, näin vain yhtenä esimerkkinä. Arkea monelle tuntemalleni elokuvaharrastajalle joista osa on jo lopettanut harrastuksen sen hintavuuden vuoksi.
